Why You Need an Author Site

Well of course I’m going to say you need an author site, what with this being a web design business & all, but no doubt you’ve been told by everyone else in your circles that you need one too. But why?

Before setting out to launch yourself into the big wide web, you need to know what you want from your site. Usually this will fall into one of two categories:

  1. I just want a personal presence online that I can point people to.
  2. I want to build an author platform.

Ah yes, the dreaded “author platform”. We’ve all been told to get one, but how?

If you want no more from your site than reason 1, then you won’t need anything too convoluted – maybe an “about me” bio page, a bibliography page showcasing your work, and a contact form. You might even feel brave enough to stick a blog on there to tell everyone what you’re up to and working on.

But reason 2 requires a little more work. It involves actually reaching out to people (something many authors are distinctly uncomfortable with!) and engaging them. At the very least, it means having a blog section with regularly-posted new content that’s relevant to readers (Google loves that), possibly a section with snippets of chapters and stories too, so that they can see what you’re about, and a signup form to capture email addresses for your email campaigns.

Cue your social media marketing and pay-per-click ad campaigns, driving hordes of readers to your site & your books… but there are no takers.

Before you collapse to your knees in the rain crying Why?! let me tell you why: it simply doesn’t look interesting.

As it turns out, people really do judge books by their covers – and not only that, but even readers have very short attention spans. To pique and keep their interest, you’re going to need:

  • A website design that visually stands out;
  • A layout that makes it easy for the readers to find what they want;
  • Snappy, concise content that they can read in a matter of seconds while still being informative;
  • A clear author brand that’s consistent across all platforms;
  • Good designs for your book covers!

Guess what? Here at Sunlight Digital we can help with all of the above. What a coincidence! Contact us today to find out how we can give you the designs and web presence you need for a price that won’t decimate your bank account.
